There is no underestimating the change between GCSEs and Sixth Form. It might seem to begin with those 3 or 4 chosen subjects you have enjoyed, or a new one or two that you are genuinely interested in will be a lot less work than your GCSEs. Wrong! It is a massive step change in your thinking and planning of your time and workload.

When you begin in Lower 6, school should be pretty good at working with you to plan your time, slot in prep or homework and of course time on a EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) for those of you taking that on too. As Lower 6 progresses you will start to feel more comfortable with the workload and level of detail of the work needed for your A’ Levels.

As you get into Summer Term in Lower 6, I can’t stress enough that planning time now will pay dividends in the Autumn term of Upper 6. If you begin to think about what subjects are of interest, plan some work experience and think about what super curricular activities you will be doing, you should have some amazing content for your personal statement come Autumn when school deadlines are looming.

Some of the so called super curricular activities include extra reading (if you know what course you would like to do, have a look at University recommended reading lists), listening to podcasts, volunteering, paid work and work experience or shadowing days. All of which help confirm subject courses to study at university and potentially affirm your choice of career.
